Silver Islet General Store

The present owners of the Silver Islet Store, the Saxberg Family of Thunder Bay, invite you to visit this historic landmark, nestled in one of Ontario's most popular tourist areas, the Sibley Peninsula. Since acquiring the store in 1988, the extensive restoration of the building has been underway. Work continues today to return this important piece of Canadiana to its original condition while renovating for modern business needs and demands of the new century. The Silver Islet General Store, as its name suggests, is a store in the old-time tradition. As the hub of the community, it is an important meeting place for a varied clientele. Tourists and visitors are our mainstay, but we also supply campers visiting nearby Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Local customers residing at Silver Islet during the spring, summer and fall, also make up an important part of our business. Much of what we offer can be found in modern convenience stores but many more items remind us of yesterday. Candy sticks, hand-painted tin toys, ships in bottles, soap made from pioneer recipes can all be found on our long, rambling pine shelves. Ice cream cones are scooped daily. We carry a complete line of groceries, provisions and camping supplies. We even sell flour and sugar by the cup!

The Tea Room

One of the Silver Islet General Store's most popular features is our Tea Room. Overlooking the majestic Lake Superior, the Tea Room offers the best home cooking found anywhere in the region. Homemade soups and pastries are featured daily. Visitors travel from as far away as Sault Ste. Marie, Winnipeg and Minneapolis for our famous pies, desserts and specialty teas.

Billiard Room

Visit our historic billiard room and enjoy a game of billiards on our antique pool table. President Sibley's Pool Room features a Brunswick Balke Collander snooker table built in 1893. Furnished with antiques and local memorabilia, the pool room pays tribute to Major Alexander Sibley, the president of the mining company.
